The PE lessons at school are completely different from the training in Form 1. At school we learn a little bit of each sport, for example basketball, football, volleyball and some athletics. In Formula 1 it’s different there they have a set training plan for each week. They usually have 5 training sessions a week, but sometimes it varies. Another difference is that in school there is one teacher per class, in Formula 1 each pilot has his own coach.

Their average training plan is tailored to each individual:

  • Cadence: 80-100.
  • 30 min intensity build up.
  • 5×30 second high intensity intervals (simulating sector corner combinations)
  • 5 min intensity steady state.
  • 5×90 second high intensity intervals (simulating multiple lap combinations)
  • 30 min low intensity steady state.

How does a pilot look like

Formula 1 drivers are more than just skilled pilots of sophisticated machinery; they are elite athletes with rigorous fitness regimens. Given the demanding nature of the sport, drivers must endure forces of up to 5 Gs (five times the force of gravity) during acceleration, braking, and cornering. To cope with these forces, drivers require exceptional core strength, cardiovascular endurance, and muscular stamina.

How a training looks like

Physical education and training are fundamental components of a Formula 1 driver’s routine. They work closely with personal trainers and fitness experts who tailor workouts to enhance their performance on the track. The training includes a mix of cardiovascular exercises, strength training, flexibility exercises, and neck and upper body workouts. Additionally, drivers engage in specific exercises to improve reaction times and hand-eye coordination, crucial attributes for split-second decision-making during races.

Diet is also important

Physical education for Formula 1 drivers extends beyond the gym. A well-balanced diet is essential to support their grueling training schedules and intense race weekends. Proper nutrition helps drivers maintain ideal body weight, maximize energy levels, and enhance mental focus.
